Marketing won’t save your art/service/product (but you can!)

As two Marketing Girlies™️ we'll be the first to admit, marketing can be hard, boring and when done wrong, manipulative? sales-y? It conjures images of mad men esque board rooms, tech bros on youtube and the ever dreaded vector illustrations of GRAPHS! GROWTH! METRICS!

We see this a lot in the online world. Marketing used as the save all or band aid for the thing we’ve made. In hopes that just going viral will save us, bring in those 10k months everyone on IG seems to be able to pull off and finally just get some relief inside our business.

BUT! When we make something and it is in contradiction of our values or the story we’ve told our audience, they can tell. We can tell.

We shy away from telling the story of the WHY. We shy away from the process. We start gaslighting ourselves and our audience. And it just feels NOT GOOD.

Trust is built in vulnerability, transparency, honesty without story telling and connection. Not in just making something pretty, using trending audio or researching the best CTA for email conversations.

Marketing can't save the thing if it isn't actually good. 🙈

How can we ask our marketing to create more truth? More transparency?

It has the impossible task of the “right” words, the “right” stories, the “right" name, the “right” title. There are so many things that have to come together in a perfectly balanced recipe that help something “sell"…or at least, we think there should be. We search and search for the most perfectly eloquent packaged way to say EXACTLY WHAT THE THING IS.

When we don't even fully understand the *insert the thing you're working in here* ourselves?

As two artists turned marketing girlies cause we see an vision for BETTER, we believe that all of the WEIGHT we are asking of marketing is usually, mostly…unfair.

What if we didn't ask marketing to save us AFTER we created an entire *offering, book, play, service, program, event, art? What if from the moment the idea hit the word doc, canvas, notion template - we looked at it HOLISTICALLY from development, to design, to production, to promotion (everything, everywhere, all at once)? Yah feel? Let's expand!

What if the above 👆 didn't just sit in the overwhelm of creation - but was also supported by your own unique approach and creative process, so that you actually do what needs to be done to bring it about, and the WORLD ACTUALLY SEES IT.

Cause like…. I think thats why you wanted to make it in the first place.

Our next Academy class is Sunday, MARCH 10TH - HOW TO MAKE MEDIA, where we will dive into what the “HOW” of creating something actually means. It doesn't mean buying the best headphones, researching the RIGHT platform (Luma, Google Form, Anchor oh my!).

It means intention! Development! Planning what (the story), goes where (form of media), when (what is the best time to share this thing with your audience?).

So that when we press go, we aren't hoping and praying 🙏 that the fun IG graphic, or the title of the project, or the tagline is the thing that “hooks”. Matching the story to the medium of performance it needs to shine is KEY.

In HOW TO MAKE MEDIA you will turn whatever story you want to tell into something you can use to meet your next goal inside your idea/process/project/business while creating a process that you can replicate over and over to make the next thing, and then the next thing. ✂️

Let's never work from a blank canvas again! 📜 🪄
